The Tawse....dreaded by Scottish schoolchildren in the early 20th century....now a fabulous addition to any toybag. The split design allows the tails to separate in the air and snap back together upon impact, delivering a sharp, stinging sensation.
A two tail tawse hand crafted from quality, sturdy 11 ounce (4.4 mm) vegtan leather. ((Vegtan refers to the tanning method, vegetable tanned. This is not a vegan product)
Features
- 1 1/2" wide and 18” long with 7” split tails.
- Dyed brown, beveled, burnished, with a carved channel around the edges.
- We even go one step more than most tawse makers by burnishing and smoothing the back ‘fluffy’ side of the implement.
- Hand buffed with carnauba wax.
At the end of the nineteenth century education became compulsory in Scotland and the leather belt was introduced as a disciplinary tool. The maker of the famous Lochgelly Tawse produced the first one for his daughter to use when she entered teaching as a profession. The tradition was continued by another maker, George Dick, and his son John J Dick. The use of the tawse in state schools started phasing out around 1983. Corporal punishment was finally banned in state schools in 1987 but continued in private schools till it was banned there too in 1998.
